OBS Tutorial for DJs

If you want to stream a mix or a live set on Facebook, YouTube, or Instagram, you need the OBS software. it will allow you to capture sound and image, and the icing on the cake is that it is completely free.
For a good stream, several things are important: image and sound quality, camera angle and background, and finally, the sync between image and sound.

Start by downloading OBS Studio; it is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux.

In our example for a Facebook live stream, we use:

  • two vinyl turntables and a mixer
  • a webcam (Logitech C922 Pro), preferably a model that compresses the video stream, which frees up your PC or MAC processor during live broadcasting
  • A mini-jack cable to plug into the line-in or microphone input of your computer, RCA on the other side depending on your mixer's output, ideally connected to the rec out.
  • a 4G or fiber connection

Once the connections are made, add in OBS under "Sources," an "Audio Input Capture" source and a "Video Capture Device."

OBS allows you to record your video to the hard drive with the "Start Recording" button, which is useful for testing.

  • In your Facebook account, start a "Live Video"
  • Copy the stream key and paste it into OBS Settings > Stream
  • Click "Start Streaming" in OBS
  • Once Facebook detects the stream, you can go live

Good to know

  • Facebook compresses sound into 128kbps MP3
  • In the audio mixer, mute all audio sources other than the line-in (camera mic, etc.)
  • If there is a lag between sound and image, adjust it in "Advanced Audio Properties" > "Sync Offset"
  • To avoid sound clipping, lower the line-in recording volume on your computer
